Autumn Term

In the Autumn term, Year 2 studied the topic “Wacky Races.”  We started the term focusing on Science and explored different materials and their uses.  We went on a local walk to gather ideas and completed an experiment to find the best material to make a roof for Penelope Pitstop's 'Compact Pussycat'!  Our final experiment was looking at how cars move on different surfaces.

For our History learning, we looked at how transport has evolved over the years and went on to study Henry Ford, who created the first automobile.  We looked at how a production line worked and tried it out using lego.

In our Art learning, we studied collage and explored the colour wheel.  We created our own transport-themed collages using a range of different textures and colours.

Throughout our Computing sessions, we learned about online safety.  In this unit of learning, we found out how to conduct safe searches online, send emails and also discussed digital footprints.

In DT we planned and created our Wacky Racer cars and used a range of different skills to construct these.

We concluded our Wacky Races topic by looking at human and physical features and compared Detroit (where Henry Ford was born) and Colchester.  We thought about creating our own wacky race and discussed which city would be the the most appropriate for the race.
